The Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council Telecom Pioneer Luncheon was held June 23, 2009 at the Royal Fork Buffet, Sioux Falls, SD. President, Kristy Zuraff called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and a silent tribute to departed and ill Pioneers.  Kristy asked for a motion for approval of the minutes. A motion was made by Ellen Rock and seconded by Verla Fritz to approve the minutes.  Motion passed.  Minutes approved.  Visitors at today's meeting were Collette Norbeck, sister of Irene Peters and Jeffery Rock, grandson of Ellen Rock.

 

Treasurer’s ReportDale Axtell, treasurer, reported a balance of $1,993.88.  The expenditures for the year include:  Banquet, portion of Holiday Luncheon, Breakfast in the Park and Watertown Picnic.  Income includes:  dues from national and a $1,000.00 bond.  After this year there will be a need to raise additional funds.  Ways to raise additional funds will be discussed at future meetings.  A motion was made by Ken Bertness and seconded by Bob Denny to approve the treasurer’s report.  Motion passed.  Report approved.

 

Fellowship: Addie sent cards to: Wayne Ronning, death of wife, Harriet and Helen Leimbach, 85th birthday.

 

Hug-A-Bears: After 33 years the Hug-A-Bear project will be discontinued. Since 2005 there were 970 bears distributed.  A thank you was extended to all who had part in the project. Remaining supplies were donated to the Blue Bell Council Hug-A-Bear group.  The last bear constructed will be placed in the Museum.  There were six members present at the final work session, June 2.

 

Education:   Nothing to report.           Community Service:   Nothing to report

 

Historical:  Bob Denny reported the committee is continuing to catalog photos.  If anyone has time on a Wednesday morning, they would appreciate some assistance in helping identify some of the people and events in the photos.  The latest donation is a small princess telephone, which came from the Seattle World's fair. It was contributed from a non Telephone Pioneer, Cam Lind, because he saw the picture of the museum opening.

 

Newspaper & Website:  Ken Bertness reported the newsletter will go out June 29th.

 

Old Business:  A representative for the “Awards” committee is still needed.  This person will be responsible for listing all projects and filling out the paperwork necessary to submit the project for consideration by National for annual awards.  Sandi Kreber has bags available for cell phone recycling.

 

A thank you was extended to all who helped or donated to the “Needy Family Christmas Project” fund raiser.  Over $700 was raised.

 

New Business:   The annual Pioneer golf outing will be July 13, 2009 at the Hiawatha Golf Course in Canton.  If you plan to attend call Jim Sievers at 605-336-4440 or Swede Svendsen at 605-334-5556.  Breakfast in the Park will be held August 15, at Sertoma Park.  Cindy Barnes-Pharr from the regional office will be in attendance.  She will be visiting with attendees and  meeting with the officers following the breakfast.  It is very important that everyone turn in their hours.

 

The Rapid City Project went very well in spite of non-cooperative weather.  This was a five day project to begin a large recreation park in Rapid City.  There were a total of 800 volunteers working on the project at this time.  Several Pioneers contributed their labor and services.  $50,000 was donated to the project from the Qwest Foundation.

 

Raffle Tickets:  Dene Amdahl, Adelaide Donaldson, Dennis Martinec, Leora Gapa, Joe Mattecheck, John Gapa, Lois Larsen, Kristy Zuraff and Ken Bertness.  Newsletter Coupon:  Don Kachelhoffer Door Prize ($5.00 Drawings):  No drawings at this meeting. The next regular meeting of Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council will be held at the Royal Fork on Tuesday, August 25, 2009.  The Golf Event will replace the July meeting.

 

A motion to adjourn was made by Tom DeVries and seconded by on Deanna Gilbertson.  Motion carried.  Meeting adjourned.
