The Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council Telecom Pioneer Luncheon was held January 26, 2010 at the Royal Fork Buffet, Sioux Falls, SD. President, Kristy Zuraff called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and a silent tribute to departed and ill Pioneers. Kristy asked for a motion for approval of the minutes. A motion was made by Ken Bertness and seconded by Bob Denny to approve the minutes. Motion passed. Minutes approved. Marilyn Haper was a guest at today's meeting.

Historical: Bob Denny reported that the committee has been inactive for the past several months. Clean-up and inventory work will begin as soon as the weather cooperates. The committee has assisted on several Council and Chapter functions since the 1st of December. Contributions from the estate of King Iverson have been received. A complete set of ten books on electricity as it relates to the early telephone, published in 1917, were included and these volumes are in mint condition. Bob noted the books are very interesting reading when compared to the state of the telephone business today. Swede Svendsen has donated two old “Dakota Central” newspapers from 1918. One written for the Mitchell area and the other for Madison.
Program: From a Dakota Central newspaper published in 1918, donated to the Museum, Bob Denny shared with us information taken from an article referencing AWT – average work time. From this we realize that some things important then are still important today, time is money.
Old Business: Kristi extend a thank you to the Christmas Holiday Luncheon Committee. The “Christmas Stocking Program” was discussed. At the next meeting the group will decide if do or do not want to have this as a project. If we participate in the project volunteers and a chairperson is needed.
New Business: Volunteers are needed for the Easter Egg Hunt BEEP project in Aberdeen Jane Denny is the chair person for the project. Volunteers will be needed to prepare baskets.
Lillian Leitheiser has donated a queen size quilt she made to be used for a raffle. The funds will be used to support the Banquet. The quilt will be displayed and tickets will be available at meetings, the 125 South Dakota Building, Pioneer functions and all fund raisers. Tickets will be $1.00 a piece or six for $5.00.
A new project being introduced this year is “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day. Free admission to one of the theme parks of Walt Disney World Resort or the Disneyland Resorts can be received when you sign up and complete a day of volunteer service with a participating organization. :You must sign up for eligible volunteer opportunities through disneyparks.com/giveaday. Participation in volunteer activities outside of this sign up process does not qualify for a free ticket. Pioneers are able to volunteer for any project posted on the disneyparks.com/giveaday site. Pioneers can now receive a 20% discount when staying at Windom Hotels. Pioneers get 5%.
