The Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council Telecom Pioneer Luncheon was held August 25, 2009 at the Royal Fork Buffet, Sioux Falls, SD. President, Kristy Zuraff called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and a silent tribute to departed and ill Pioneers.  Kristy asked for a motion for approval of the minutes. A motion was made by Jack Shaffer and seconded by Verla Fritz to approve the minutes.  Motion passed.  Minutes approved.  Visitors at today's meeting were Vonda and Roger Peterson, sister and brother-in-law of Verla Fritz, Donna McKettrick and Mackena, granddaughter of Dale Axtel.

 

Treasurer’s ReportDale Axtell, treasurer, reported a balance of $1,801.82.    A motion was made by Tom DeVries and seconded by Chuck Jensen to approve the treasurer’s report.  Motion passed.  Report approved.

 

Fellowship: Addie sent cards to:  Alma Black family, Alma's death; Judy Bunde, Good Samaritan; Lloyd Wakeman, death of wife, Lois; Carol Hippler, death of husband, Donald; Judy Bunde family, Judy's death; Ed and Helen Wallace, death of mother, Hazel; LaVonne Nelson, death of mother, Ruby Bailey and Leora Gapa, hospitalized for surgery.

 

Education:   Nothing to report.                Newspaper & Website:  Nothing to report.

 

Historical:  Bob Denny reported there are numerous photographs to be cataloged.  If anyone has time on a Wednesday morning the committee would appreciate it if you would stop in and help identify some of the people and/or events in the photos.  The lobby displays have been changed.  One cabinet has the new operations from the Army Air Base during WWII with the operators and the new long distance capabilities.  We recognized some faces and names from that era.  The other cabinet shows some of the various projects that we have worked on in the last few years.  The latest item received, a cable lasher from the late 1950's or early 1960's, came from Doug Sherman.  An attempt to date the item will be made when it is added to the inventory.  The region Vice President, Cindy Barnes Pharr, was in town last week.  One of her priorities it to make museums more available to everyone.  The committee will be working with her to accomplish that as a company wide objective.

 

Community Service:   Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council will serve the Banquet in October.  More information to follow.

 

Old Business:  A representative for the “Awards” committee is still needed.  This person will be responsible for listing all projects and filling out the paperwork necessary to submit the project for consideration by National for annual awards.  Sandi is currently working on preparation of materials to submit the Rapid City Project for an award.  Sandi Kreber has bags available for cell phone recycling. All are reminded to turn in volunteer hours to Verla Fritz.

 

The annual Golf Outing was held July 13 at Hiawatha Golf Course, Canton, SD.  There were 32 in attendance.  Next years event will be July 12.  T-times will begin at 7:30 AM so all golfers are finished by noon.

 

The Pioneer Annual Breakfast in the Park was held August 15 at Sertoma Park, Sioux Falls, SD.  There were 75 in attendance.  Cindy Barnes Pharr, from Staff Community Relations, in Arizona, attended and conducted a training session for the officers following the picnic.  Handouts were given out stating the goals and objective of Qwest Pioneer, resources available and an update of projects.

 

New Business:   There will be a “Readers for Life” project in Huron and Watertown.  The Annual Christmas Luncheon will be held December 3, 2009 at All Occasions, near the Tea Exit from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

The next regular meeting of Sioux J.L.W. Zietlow Council will be held at the Royal Fork on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. 

 

A motion to adjourn was made by Don Kachelhoffer and seconded by Diana Gilbertson.  Motion carried.  Meeting adjourned. There were 43 members present at today's meeting.

Treasurer’s ReportKristy Zuraff  reported there is $3,853.87 in the treasury.  A motion for approval was made by Jack Tom DeVries and seconded by Gordon Benda.

Hallberg, in hospice care for blood disorder; Edith Wrage, hospitalized, surgery and LaWanda Huls family on her death.

Hug-A-Bears: Hug-A-Bears meets the first Tuesday of each month from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Qwest Garage, located at 101 N Indiana Avenue. The group met on July 1 with eight members attending and on August 8 with with eight members attending.

Education:   Verla Fritz reported that the project at Robert Frost was completed and another request has been received from Jefferson Elementary to paint a map.

Historical:  Bob Denny reported pictures, documents and miscellaneous items are still coming in from various sources.  Cataloging of printed material and photographs is on going.  556 items are in the inventory as of this date.  As a committee it was decided to use the plywood shelving that was in the original Pioneer room to make a book case.  Thanks to Joe Mattecheck and Don Kachelhoffer the project is completed and is in the museum room filled with binders containing all of the pictures.  The committee is working with Jeff Carmon to finalize procedures to let people into the building to visit the museum during Pioneer week in November.

Community Service:   The Pioneers will serve the Banquet in October.  More information to follow.

New Business:   Kristy thanked all who helped or brought goodies, both with the Harmonden project and the map painting at Robert Frost.

Bags for cell phone recycling will be available soon.  The money brought in by this project will be used for Children's Education programs.

Everyone is reminded to turn in their volunteer hours and send address changes to Bob Denny.

The leftover food from the “Harmonden” project was donated to St. Francis House.  They were very appreciative as they are serving about 50 meals per day.
