Beeping Easter eggs bring smiles

Pioneers from Great Falls and Helena again helped with the annual School for the Deaf and Blind Easter egg hunt.

Beeping eggs, made and maintained by Reid Edwards, make it possible for blind youngsters to participate in this tradition. The Pioneers also provide funds to purchase prizes for the 25 youngsters who participate in the event.

Reid and partner, Bev, also did a great job of explaining our Pioneer involvement in TV interviews that covered the activities.  Other Pioneers helping with the event were Terri Rogers, Dean Mack, Dave Gibson, Peg & Frank Flynn, Joe Edwards and Russ Cravens.

Here we have volunteers, Joe Edwards and Margret Smith with children from the Bryant School in Helena reading their read to me books.  We have had many hours of fun for children and volunteers reading the books.

Pioneer volunteers with the Montana Talking Book program were recognized by Qwest Pioneers and the Montana State Library at the Little Red School House picnic in Helena in July.  From L to R are:  Russ Cravens, Frontier Club president; Gloria Purcell, Pioneer volunteer; Christie Briggs, supervisor, Montana Talking Book Library; Tom Tompkins, Pioneer volunteer; Diane Gunderson, volunteer coordinator, MTBL; Elaine LaCroix, Pioneer volunteer; Terri Rogers, Montana Chapter president;  Frank Flynn, Pioneer volunteer; Chuck Flynn, Pioneer volunteer; and Lee Madison, equipment coordinator, MTBL.  Also recognized were Pioneer Talking Book volunteers, including those who have retired in the last year, who were unable to attend the picnic.  They are:  Cookie Basinger, Howard Bloom, Jack Buckley, and Glenn Rasmussen.  In memoriam, we remember long-time volunteers Tom Basinger, Gladys Bloom and John Doig .

The Telephone Pioneers of the Montana Talking Book Library have contributed 17,819 hours over the last 10 years to repair, clean and maintain cassette machines for nearly 3,000 Montana library patrons with visual impairments.

About 65 Pioneers gathered at Helena's Little Red School House on a pleasant July day to catch up with friends and enjoy a great meal.

Chuck Flynn thanks the Pioneer cooks (with some friendly kidding) Joe Edwards and Dean Mack can dish up a clever comeback as well as hamburgers and hot dogs.
